Homeschool - February

For Groundhog Day, we did a directed drawing with watercolors.  We also practiced the four types of sentences using the theme of groundhogs.

We spent a couple of weeks learning about the Winter Olympics. This year they were held in Beijing, China.  We watched the different events and picked six countries to track throughout the competition.  We made a display of their flags, used coordinates to graph the Olympic rings, and kept track of medals earned.  At the end of the competition they made a bar graph to show which countries won the most medals.  They also spent a lot of time making their own books of the different events.  They drew adorable illustrations and added facts about the many sports they watched. Of course, we had to watch "Cool Runnings" and they loved it.

For Valentine's Day, we made Valentines for our loved ones, as well as for some elderly people in the community.  We read Valentine's themed books and ate red velvet cupcakes, went on a scavenger hunt, and roller skated with Tatiana and Pastor Kari at church.

Olivia's been working hard on her Elliot Memory book.  Her words and illustrations are so sweet.

Auntie Brigid gifted Simon and Olivia with some books with paper dinosaurs and paper unicorns.  They were so fun to put together and play with!

We played with food coloring, baking soda, and vinegar today.  Simon loved seeing what color bubbles he could make.

We finished our Pippi Longstocking book.  They kids loved it!  It was so much fun to read with them.  One of their favorite chapters was Pippi going to the circus, so we made our own.  We made acrobats to hang from the ceiling fan, had lions jump through the flaming hoop, played some carnival games, had face (hand) painting, and had lots of yummy circus food: corn dogs, cotton candy, circus peanuts, and more!

Livi spent an afternoon making flower crowns while Nolan worked with his snap circuits.

While our kitchen floor was being installed, we went out to the cabin to do our schooling.  It was an absolutely wonderful place to learn, free of our normal distractions, but a change of scenery and so peaceful.  We spent two full days out there, reading, doing puzzles, playing games, and being outside.  It was just so relaxing and wonderful and screen free.  I really enjoyed teaching and learning in this way - with our materials set out on the table and the freedom to move from one activity to the next so easily.  We'll have to try to incorporate some of this feel into our schooling at home.  We all loved it.

Weekly visits to our library continue to be highlights.  We love picking new books, visiting our librarians and the pets, and seeing what fun activities they have for us each week.  We love our library!
