August Summer Fun

August was kind of a rough month.  Because I got so sick for so long, we didn't do much.  Here are a few of the memories:

Olivia played soccer. - she had practice on Mondays and games on Wednesdays.

Duluth

Grandma and Grandpa invited on a trip to Duluth at the end of August.  We hadn't been there since before Olivia was born, so we were looking forward to showing the kids the sights and spending some quality time with Grandma and Grandpa.  We started the trip with a stop at Briar House, which seemed like a wonderful idea until we realized we had to stop to go to the bathroom 1329983409 times along the way.  The kids were really good in the car, however, and we arrived to the Lake Superior Zoo shortly after lunch.

The kids really enjoyed seeing all the animals (except the giant yellow python).  They had quite a range of different creepy crawlies including a giant frog, a beautiful chameleon, and Grandma Patti's new favorite: an axolotl.

It was very hot that day, so we didn't last a super long time, but we enjoyed seeing the mountain lion, lynx, and lemurs.  It's always fun to go to the zoo!

The next morning we headed to the Great Lakes Aquarium.  We got in for free because we are a homeschool family, which I thought was so neat!  We had a great time exploring the many animals, getting a first class view of Lake Superior, and playing in the water tables.

Grandma and Grandpa spoiled the kids with a few special souvenirs: Sara the Seahorse, Bacon the Zebra Shark, and a awesome Earth Science kit.

After a late lunch, we headed to the train depot for a ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. The kids had never been on a train before so they were curious what it was all about.

Unfortunately, the train ride was pretty lame and the scenery was subpar - lots of concrete and construction and not much for views of the lake.

Our favorite spot was definitely Park Point beach.  The kids had so much fun wading, looking for rocks, and playing in the sand.  Their clothes got soaking wet and so sandy, but they had an absolutely blast.  I think they could have spent all day there! It was really fun to have a weekend away with Grandma and Grandpa and to get to explore a new city!
