"Shattered" Plans

After having to postpone our Christmas gathering due to Covid, we were so excited that my parents were coming to town to celebrate New Years.  We hadn't been to Holiday Acres in a while as a family, so we decided to meet there along with Steve and Patti and have a fun evening out to kick off our weekend.  The moment we pulled into the parking lot, we knew things were not going to turn out how we planned.

Dad was in the parking lot, looking for something in his truck, and when I greeted him, he told me that Mom had fallen.  I hurried inside to find that Mom had slipped on some uneven ground in the bar area and fallen, smashing her kneecap into the hard stone on the way down.  She was in excruciating pain and we couldn't move her.  It took a bit of persuading, but eventually she agreed to let us call an ambulance to help us get her into the hospital safely.

Dad and I followed the ambulance and when we got to the Rhinelander ER and got some imaging, we found that her patella was completely shattered into many pieces.  Rhinelander does not have an orthopedic department, and Mom understandably wanted treatment closer to home, so they discharged her with a brace and pain medication and the plan to report to surgery in Eau Claire the following day.  We took her back to our house where she was able to get a little rest on the reclining sofa.  The next day was her surgery where the surgeon attempted to wire her patella back together.  The kids and I headed to Eau Claire the following day to help her manuever and stay comfortable.  We stayed for a week and the kids and I kept her company as she rested and recouped.  Unfortunately during the week we were there, Nolan developed a fever which we eventually found out was appendicitis, but that's a tale for another post... It sure was a disheartening and frustrating way to start our new year.
