Fort Wilderness

Our friend, Laura, works at Fort Wilderness and she invited us to camp to help them get the animals used to being handled before the upcoming summer season.  There was a variety of different reptiles the kids got to meet, and though I'm definitely not a reptile person, it was very cool.

We began by meeting Randall, the Leopard Gecko.

Next was Van Gogh, the tiny baby painted turtle.

Toothless, the Bearded Dragon, was new to camp.  He was a little more jumpy, but was super cool.  We got to see him hunt some cockroaches and gobble them down.

Next up was the corn snake named Chai.  I kept my distance, but Nolan was brave and enjoyed asking questions and touching it. Simon was also fearless and Jessica was gracious enough to take him up to meet her.

The final animal we saw was the the one I was most nervous about...the Ball Python, Kaa.  I was surprised at Nolan, who with the encouragement of his friends, held her and even let her dangle around his neck!  Simon was also captivated and was so close to Kaa that her tongue flicked his nose while they were staring eye to eye.  Olivia and I hung back a little bit, but we both gathered our courage to touch her.  This was the first snake I've ever touched.  Olivia didn't like how squishy she felt.

We finished a wonderful day with a picnic at Hodag Park and plenty of time soaking up the sunshine at the playground.
