South Dakota - Day 5

Today we ventured up north for a trip down the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway.  It was an absolutely beautiful place to visit.  There were beautiful rock cliffs lined with Ponderosa Pine on either side of the road and a beautiful stream that wove along in the canyon.

The first waterfall we visited was called Bridal Veil Falls.  It was beautiful and we were lucky enough to have a fellow tourist offer to take a family picture for us!

We saw a white tail deer, which reminded us of home.

We decided to hike to the next waterfalls at Roughlock Falls.  It ended up being kind of a long walk for the little legs we had with us, but it was absolutely beautiful.  The waterfalls themselves reminded of something you'd see in Scotland or even Lord of the Rings.  They were so green and lush and unique.  It was a beautiful way to spend the morning!

I had also heard a recommendation about a place called Storybook Island.  We decided to check it out and I'm so glad we did.  It was a huge free park filled with every possible storybook character you could imagine.  There was tons of playground equipment, a train, and even a carousel.  It was absolutely magical.  The kids loved seeing all the character-themed playsets.  I took the kids on the (much too fast) carousel and we had ice cream.  It was the perfect play-filled outing we needed after so much time in the car.
