South Dakota - Day Two

The next morning we set out on the last leg of our journey.  Sioux Falls to Rapid City is about a five hour drive, but we planned to make several stops along the way to break up the trip.  Our first stop was the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.  Their claim to fame is their huge corn murals, made entirely out of cobs of corn. This was the first souvenir shop our kids encountered and of course they wanted to buy everything.  We advised them to wait a bit longer before spending their money, but they sure liked looking around.

Our next stop was Wall Drug in the teeny town of Wall, SD. We looked around for a few minutes before grabbing some lunch.  Then it was time to continue on for the highlight of the day: Badlands National Park!

The Badlands are absolutely breathtaking and we entered the park entrance near some of the highest vistas.  It was a little nerve-wracking to make sure everyone was safe and there were steep drop-offs everywhere and Simon is NOT cautious in the least.  Nolan was particularly nervous as we drove down the winding road into the lower part of the park.  I thought it was absolutely amazing, following the twists and turns through the multi-colored rock.

As we were leaving the park, we were so lucky to see some wildlife - several large bison and some barking prairie dogs.  We were all so excited to see some of our first South Dakota creatures!  It's going to be such a great trip!
