Firemen to the rescue!

Yesterday morning, we finally had a free minute and I decided to take Nolan to get his crazy mop of hair trimmed up for the holidays.  When we got there, I could see his anxiety start to surface and by the time the stylist called his name, he was hiding under the table and was not going to come out.

Two firemen came in and saw that I was trying me best to coax him out and they came over and knelt down next to him.  They told him that if he could be a really brave boy and get his haircut, he could come down to the station and sit in the firetruck!  That was music to this little truck-loving boy's ears and he tentatively agreed to getting his hair cut, if he could sit on Mommy's lap and not have to wear the cape.

After finishing his cut with his super patient stylist, we headed down to the station.  Several of the firemen accompanied us and showed us their brand new firetruck!  Nolan was so impressed,, but wanted to make sure no one would turn the siren on.  We all got to go inside and they brought the kids their very own fire hats to take home.

Nolan has really been into emergency vehicles of all kinds lately, so he was thrilled to get the chance to see an ambulance, too.  He got to climb in the back and see the stretcher, heart monitor, and gloves.  He thought it was really cool that the heart monitor shows what someone's heart is doing on a screen.

Once we got home, my kids didn't want to take off their helmets.  In fact, they wore them during lunch and during playtime that afternoon.

I was so unbelievably touched that these young men would go out of their way to do something so kind for us.  Their simple action brightened my little boy's day, and made me feel so great about the community we live in.  Our world is a tumultuous place right now.  Hate seems to be lurking around every corner.  Their simple, but very kind act, meant so much to my family and was such a wonderful example of how small actions can have a huge impact.  Thanks, Rhinelander Fire Department!  You made our ordinary day into a special one!
